This year, the Lapeer County EMS Breast Cancer Awareness fundraiser is proud to come together in support of Amber Hyek and her family as she continues her fight against breast cancer.
Amber and her husband, Dennis, an Arcadia Twp. firefighter will celebrate their 20th wedding anniversary this October. Together, they have an 18-year-old daughter, Madison, who recently began college at Saginaw Valley State University, where she is pursuing a career as an oncology nurse.
At the beginning of January, Amber was diagnosed with Stage 2 triple-negative breast cancer. Within weeks, she began chemotherapy, undergoing treatments from late January through the end of July. On August 31st, Amber underwent a double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery. She and her family are now awaiting pathology results and hoping to hear that the months of chemotherapy successfully did its job.
Throughout her treatment, Amber's oncologist advised her to stop working because her job involves regular contact with the public and treatment had left her immune system vulnerable. She has been on long-term disability since May, adding financial challenges to an already difficult journey.
Through this year's Lapeer County EMS Breast Cancer Awareness Fundraiser, our community has an opportunity to stand beside Amber, Dennis, and Madison during this incredibly challenging time.
A portion of every Breast Cancer Awareness apparel purchased through Leave Day Apparel Co. will be donated directly to Amber and her family to help support them as she continues her treatment and recovery.
